The survey revealed two important failings of programs taught currently in most schools: (1) that teachers, many of whom are cognizant of the value of poetry in education but are nonetheless uncomfortable with it, tend to use a small group of poems that they find principally in popular language arts and reading texts and (2) that the most frequently used poems were written before the turn of the century. 'Halloween' by Harry Behn, is a delightful picture book with very simple text which is illustrated beautifully by Greg Couch. The study sample was randomly selected by state, school district, and school, throughout the United States. The purpose of this paper, which is part of a larger study on read-aloud practices of public elementary school teachers, is to report the findings of a survey concerning the poetry selections that teachers of grades 4, 5, and 6 read to their pupils. A knowledge of current teaching practices is helpful in designing these new programs. In recent years there has been a growing emphasis on the development of new literature programs in elementary schools.
